Court date reset for Logan man after no-show

LOGAN — First District Court Judge Kevin Allen ordered a Logan man released on his own recognizance Thursday afternoon following an arrest warrant hearing.

Defendant Nathan Cook, charged with forgery, a third-degree felony, and theft, a misdemeanor, failed to appear before Judge Thomas Willmore for a scheduled pretrial conference Monday. An arrest warrant was issued immediately afterward and Logan police officers arrested Cook Thursday afternoon.

Appearing at court dates is vital, Allen said. “Nathan, I know you have a lot of court things you have to go to but you have to go to those,” Allen said. You just cannot miss court or you’re going to get another warrant.”

Cook said he had missed his court appearance because he couldn’t forego a day at work. He worried the arrest might have cost him the job because he was unable to make contact with his employers to let them know why he wouldn’t be coming to work.

Allen ordered Cook be released and urged him to contact his employers immediately in an attempt to keep the job.

“I’m going to release you today so hopefully you can go back and get it,” Allen said. “Tell them it was just a misunderstanding.”

Resetting the pretrial conference to Willmore’s calendar wouldn’t be the best idea, Allen said. Instead, Cook was ordered to appear before Allen on May 8.

“Don’t miss it,” Allen said. “I’ll see you then.”
