LOGAN—Over a year of planning and collaboration with Nike came together this weekend as Utah State revealed its new look.

USU has been working with Nike since last year to rebrand Utah State Athletics. The university paraded out its new logo, wordmark, Aggie bull and uniforms Saturday.

It has been a long process, says Ryan Mclane, assistant athletics director of marketing. “Going into a rebranding campaign, you never realize how ingrained the old brand is across all areas of operation. Team uniforms, field and court logos, in-venue signage—everything down to department letterhead requires change,” he said.

Not only has the logo been redesigned, but the Aggie brand is getting a makeover as well. The days of random T-shirts sporting the Aggie logo with whimsical fonts and different colors are over. With the rebranding, anything with Utah State on it must use a specific font and color scheme.

For Aggie sports teams, this means new uniforms. For fans, it may mean new apparel. “We have a great relationship with our local Aggie apparel providers. The day of the logo release, our fans will have the opportunity to purchase items, sporting the new look, at Romney Stadium,” Mclane said last week.

Some students say they have mixed feelings about changing the USU “look.” Freshman Rachel Jensen says she really likes the old logo. “I don’t really like change,” she said, “but maybe it will be cool. I don’t know yet.”

Fellow Aggie Kyle West said, “I like the heritage of the old logo.” But he also likes the idea of trying something new. “It could be good or bad,” the sophomore said.

Keeping the project under the radar was a challenge, Mclane said. The closer it got to Saturday’s roll-out, the worried he was about a leak. “We all know it’s very easy to snap a quick photo with your cell phone and post it online within seconds.”

As the new look was finalized and items bearing the logo were created, an increased number of individuals were able to see the new look. One of the privileged few to see the new design was Karson Kalian, ASUSU athletics and campus recreation VP.

Kalian shared the Athletics department’s excitement about the new logo. “I’m excited to see how everyone reacts,” he said. Some of his excitement focused on the new HURD logo. “It brings an edgy, fear-bringing logo to the student section,” Kalian said. “It’s something that represents the student section the way it should be.”

To ensure that the new logo reaches the community, the new look will adorn a number of mediums. Banners in downtown Logan and outside Romney Stadium displayed the new logo on Saturday. And next week, “fans will see a new and improved UtahStateAggies.com,” says Mclane. There will also be increased signage around athletic venues and throughout Cache Valley.
