LOGAN—Plenty going on during Election Week in Cache Valley and on the USU campus, from a Utah GOP sweep to a pair of suicides.

In the news, USU students, candidates and other voters gather in the Huntsman School of Business on Election Night to watch the returns. It’s business as usual in Utah as voters send incumbent Republicans from U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch and Gov. Gary Herbert to local state legislators Curt Webb and Lyle Hillyard back to office.

But backers of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, who easily won in Utah, were disappointed as President Barack Obama was reelected.

Meanwhile, law and emergency personnel respond to two suicides in Cache Valley as a 26-year-old man’s death cleared a Logan apartment complex, and a 40-year-old Smithfield man died in his home, in both cases using hazardous chemicals. Both victims left notes on their doors warning authorities about the presence of dangerous chemicals.

In other news . . .

• Hyde Park citizens are circulating a petition to put a referendum to the vote on whether to permit beer sales at the Maverik store on Hwy 91.

• In their only debate of the campaign, incumbent Lt. Gov. Greg Bell and challenger Vince Rampton came to USU just days before the election to exchange their views on topics from education funding to the state’s economy.

• USU grad students explain their project to clean up polluted rivers and streams, harvesting algae to create byproducts, including plastics and fuel.

• It’s flu season—tips on avoiding the dreaded winter illness.

• USU tries for a world record in speed-dating for a good cause.

• Students from India ease their homesickness and celebrate Diwali, the annual festival of light, with traditional dance and some flashes of Bollywood.

• Stacking crates in the Nelson Fieldhouse with the Outdoor Rec Program.

Snow Coming

The balmy fall weather is over as snow is coming to Utah. High temperatures will drop from mid-60s on Wednesday to 35 degrees and snow Friday and Saturday.

Sports

In Aggie sports—two WAC championships. The USU women’s volleyball and soccer teams both end their seasons at the top of their games.

The USU men’s basketball team has been smoking their opponents in pre-season, topping Canada’s Simon Fraser University 92-56. Idaho State comes to town this weekend.

Aggie hockey splits with the University of Utah, losing its first game to the Utes in 10 years, and then crushing the U 10-1 the next night. Next up: BYU on Friday.

The USU women’s basketball team had to work hard against New Mexico Highlands, but pulled out a win.

Regarding the new alcohol ordinance in Hyde Park. . .just a clarification. The petition is not to rescind the new alcohol ordinance but just to get an initiative on the ballot for Hyde Park residents to vote one way or the other.

    Thanks,

    Bryan
