College of Science dean reaches out to Utah State alumni in D.C.

The dean of the Utah State University College of Science will be holding a breakfast for alumni in Washington, D.C., on Nov. 12.

“One of the things I’m really interested in doing is reaching out and getting to know alumni from USU from all over the country,” said Maura Hagan, who became the school’s dean on Sept. 1.

Hagan said there are a lot of Utah State alumni in the D.C. area and said she is looking forward to meeting College of Science alumni as well as other alumni.

“We were primarily targeting College of Science alumni,” Hagan said. “But, we certainly wouldn’t turn anybody away. I do know that the College of Science actually touches almost every single undergraduate that comes through school at this university. I’d like to hear from other alumni and ask them, ‘How did your experience from the College of Science impact you in your life and your career?’”

Vicki Jones, the dean’s assistant, is working to contact alumni in that area.

“We did an email blast yesterday to around 185 people,” Jones said. “I sent these cards out today. Once they start receiving these and deciding to come, it will all be an automated process.”

Hagan is on the Board of Atmospheric Science and Climate of the National Academy of Sciences. That board meets about twice a year at the national academy’s headquarters in Washington D.C.

The D.C. breakfast isn’t the only way Hagan is working to reach out to Aggies. She has also held a “Breakfast with the dean” for current college of science students and held a reception for faculty at the Logan Country Club — and she isn’t planning on stopping there.

“We will have other kinds of occasions,” Hagan said. “If I travel to other parts of the country I would like to try similar things if there is a sufficient population of USU grads I could meet. It’s always nice to do things on a face-to-face basis.”
