LOGAN–To ratify the Board of Equalization’s actions for the year, Cache County Council held a special meeting Tuesday that lasted 10 minutes

The meeting was called to order at 5 p.m. and Council Chairman Petersen proposed an amendment to the agenda to include tax hardship. The council, acting as the Board of Equalization, moved to approve the adjustments or rejections of property tax appeals. The motion passed with all in favor.

The council then moved out of the Board of Equalization and discussed tax hardships.

While there are a lot of economic issues that Cache Valley citizens are experiencing, most do not ask for abatement, County Executive Lynn Lemon said. However, the cases of those who do ask for abatement should still be considered carefully,

“I know this is a hard issue,” Lemon said.

The council discussed four cases of tax hardship. They approved two and denied two. In every case the council voted unanimously.

Of one of the cases, Councilman Zilles stated that while one family was struggling and had been having “terrible, terrible family squabbles,” it had “nothing to do with the county in my opinion.” That case was rejected.

The meeting was adjourned at 5:10.
