Expanding water resources a top priority in Millville, council says

MILLVILLE–The city would like to be able to use some of its water shares from Garr Spring Irrigation Co. for not only irrigation but for culinary water as well. City maintenance superintendent Gary Larsen told the City Council Thursday he met with the board of Garr Spring earlier in the week, but no agreement was reached. The council plans to keep working with the board in order to come to an agreement
“This could be a big milestone for the Millville water system for years to come,” Larsen said. The city has a municipal culinary water system for household water. One of the wells used for culinary water in Millville, the Glen Ridge well, provides 280 gallons of water per minute. If allowed to add these other water shares for culinary use it would have the ability to provide 1,000-1,500 gallons of water per minute, Larsen said.
“It would take quite a bit of work to make this happen but it would be well worth it,” said Mayor Mike Johnson. The council agreed to keep pursuing these water shares.
Councilman Jared Taylor said “This is a No. 1 priority.”
Water is an important resource to Millville because that is the only place where they gain revenue, Councilman Brian Jensen said. “The only thing Millville has to sell is water. We’re in the water business.”
The council also discussed how to deal with a number of inactive water hookups in the city. For example, there are five sites where a building has been torn down but the water service is still intact. Superintendent Larsen and Councilman Jensen were asked to come up with an ordinance outlining how to deal with these inactive water services to present to the council for approval at a later date.
