U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch spoke to USU students Thursday about his efforts to eliminate the need for fossil fuels and the benefits it would have on the environment, economy and national security.

But the senior senator from Utah told students at the Jon M. Huntsman School of Business E-Week gathering that much more work needs to be done on alternate fuels.

“It’s time I focused on alternative fuels and advanced vehicle technologies,” Hatch said. “I remain convinced that no alternative fuel is ready to replace our need for fossil fuels.”

In his E-Week keynote address, Hatch called for more attention to electric hybrids as having the greatest potential to replace fossil fuels.

“Plug-in hybrids may prove to be nothing short of revolutionary,” Hatch said.

The senator challenges USU students to “really get going and come up with a lot of suggestions” for lawmakers to implement.

“You young people are the most innovative people in the world,” Hatch said.
