LOGAN–A “Style Premier” fashion show was hosted by students in the fashion merchandising class at Bridgerland Applied Technology College recently. The semi-annual event highlights collaborations and design by the students preparing to work in the fashion merchandising industry.

Local retailers donated ensembles which were arranged by the students of BATC and modeled by high school students from Cache Valley. The evening was broken into stylistic categories, and models had their time on the catwalk flaunting business, casual, lacy and formal fashions. Students in the fashion class also collaborated on two lines featuring Lady Gaga-inspired outfits and 1950’s dresses.

The evening was anchored by a line designed and fabricated entirely out of recycled fabric by tenured student Ben Roghaar.

“We put Ben’s line in the middle because it was very new and creative,” said JaDene Denniston, faculty member. “I’m really proud of my Ben.” Denniston has been a facilitator for the spring and fall fashion shows for two years.

Roghaar’s idea for the “Salvage” line, made entirely of brown towels and bedsheets, came when his employer was purchasing replacements towels at the K Salon and Spa, where he works. “I didn’t want the rags to go to waste,” Roghaar said, “and my friend was getting rid of his old bed sheets, so I decided that I should use them for this show.”

Without any formal sketching or planning, Roghaar got to work and completed the line in two weeks.

“I didn’t know what I was making until I had the materials on the forms and the models,” Roghaar said, “At first I didn’t know how much material I had, so I did a lot of draping and used elastics until things came together.”

As for plans for his future in fashion merchandising, Roghaar said, ”I’ll probably do the spring show, because this was the first whole set and collection that I’ve done. I want to do it forever!”
