HYDE PARK–An informational meeting for the new Hyde Park Youth City Council was held Thursday night at the city office. Mayor Bryan Cox led the meeting and Councilman Mark Hurd was also in attendance as a representative from the City Council.

Cox introduced Stephanie Allred as the youth council’s advisor. “I want to provide the youth an opportunity to have a voice in the city. I don’t want to limit what they can come up with, the sky is the limit,” Allred said.

Cox outlined the benefits a youth council would have for both the city and the youth involved with it. He listed problem-solving and learning how to work in a team environment as examples.

Allred lauded the fresh perspective youth would have on issues facing Hyde Park.

Kade Esplin, 17, said, “I want to get teens more involved in the community, and make an overall difference.”

The youth council will be involved in fundraisers and the planning of community events such as the annual city celebration. They will help make decisions about parks and recreational facilities in the city. “If we’re going to have parks, we might as well have parks that appeal to the youth,” Cox said.

Members of the youth council will also have the chance to shadow the Hyde Park City Council and learn more about the city and the way it is governed.

Mark Allred, 15, said he would like to be a part of the youth council because he has always been interested in government and politics. The youth council will have specific positions such as mayor and recorder. Each council member will be sworn into office.

Hyde Park residents attending grades 9-11 are eligible to apply for the youth city council. Meetings will be held bimonthly and 75 percent attendance is required. Applications are available on the Hyde Park website and must be turned in to the city office by 4:30 p.m. Feb. 8.
