Hyrum council members seeking ways to revitalize trailer park

HYRUM–What could be done to renovate and revitalize the community? City Administrator D. Brent Jensen asked City Council members Thursday to drive through the city’s mobile home park and consider that question.

“If I recall correctly, about 70 percent of the crime in Hyrum originates from the trailer park,” said Councilman Craig L. Rasmussen.

However, Jensen disagreed. “The data doesn’t support that number,” he said. “But the area does need some help. That’s why I’m asking the council to drive through the area and come up with suggestions on how we can improve the land.”

“What we need to make clear is that we’re not going after the people who live in the mobile homes,” said Councilwoman Stephanie Miller. “We just want the area to be up to code.”

“There are a lot of great people who live down there,” said Councilman Paul C. James. “But it would be nice if it was cleaned up a bit.”

“There are many people whose income level requires them to live in the mobile home park,” said Miller. “We just need to make sure that the area is safe for the people that need to live there.”

Mayor Dean Howard suggested that the problem might turn out to be a bit more complicated than expected.

“We’ve talked to some of the owners of the trailers before,” said Howard. “The general consensus was that the inhabitants of the park didn’t really care about cleaning the area up, they were just tenants living on rented land.

“The responsibility of cleaning up the area may fall to the land owner,” Howard continued. “And if I recall, we’ve had some disputes with him in the past.”

Jensen said there were many options. “However, when looking over the budget, I just felt that there are some funds available that should perhaps be allocated to cleaning up the trailer park. It’s part of our community and it is an area that needs to be addressed,” said Jensen.
