HYRUM – The city’s Youth Council will be undergoing somewhat of a makeover with changes that are going to be implemented to the current makeup of the council.

Interviews for Hyrum’s Youth Council were conducted earlier in the week by Councilwoman Stephanie Miller. The city had 20 youth apply for the council positions and all 20 were offered positions on the council.

“We had some really outstanding youth that applied,” Miller said.

In previous years Hyrum has had a youth council as well as a youth committee, said Miller. The city is going to try something new this year by eliminating the committee and having all youth members on the council. There will still be a youth mayor, a historian and a recorder, who will attend trainings and provide leadership. The rest will be considered council members.

“We’d like for the council members to have assignments and have them be assignments that will help them learn more about how the city is run,” said Miller.

Miller would like for the youth council members to participate in different parts of the city’s government and organizations so they can better understand how the city runs and functions. Safety and Planning and Zoning are two areas she would like to have youth members participate in.

In other business, the city council tabled a discussion on the potential purchase of irrigation water from an individual in Wellsville until other options have been pursued. The mayor expressed his concern that the price the individual is asking for irrigation shares is too expensive. Councilman Craig Rasmussen agreed, and it was decided that other options would be considered before bringing anything for approval before the council.

The meeting ended with Rasmussen recapping his experience at the opening of Nibley City’s own community center. “I represented Hyrum city at Nibley’s Community Center opening, and it’s a beautiful building. I encourage you if you haven’t seen it to stop in there and check it out.”
