Locker room search leads to arrest of Logan High student
December 6th, 2011 Posted in OpinionLOGAN — A call from Logan High School to the Logan City Police Department last week led to the arrest of one juvenile.
Friday morning, the high school administration requested canine back up from the narcotics division of the police department, Sgt. Derek Dickey said. He said the school occasionally asks for the department’s assistance with random drug searches.
“They were searching the locker room area and one of the canines alerted them to a backpack laying on the floor,” Dickey said.
Law enforcement officers entered the boys’ locker room of the school just after 8 a.m., where the dogs immediately led officers to an unattended backpack, according to police reports. After searching through the backpack, police found a small amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. A juvenile admitted to owning the marijuana, and has been formally charged with possession of an illegal substance.
Dickey said he was unsure why the school requested back up, but said school administration may have been tipped off about the drugs.
“On occasion, the school does random searches with the dogs,” he said. “(The results) are hit and miss.”
