New campus eatery’s 1st week so good, it’s already looking to expand
December 4th, 2011 Posted in Arts and LifeLOGAN—A new eatery on the east side of the Utah State University campus is celebrating a booming first week of business.
“It’s been going really well,” said Katie Marchant, manager of Artist’s Block Café and Bakery on the bottom floor of the Fine Arts Building. “We’re super busy from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and a lot of people have told us how great it is to have a close place for them to eat without going outside.”
The idea for the café began about three years ago when dining service officials began hearing complaints about a lack of eating options on the east side of campus.
“Everyone was sick of going to the other side of campus for food,” Marchant said. “It took a while to get the café into motion, but I think a lot of people are happy with it.”
The convenient location and hours are an important part of why students and teachers like the café so much, Marchant said. And that’s not to mention the nine new-to-campus hot sandwiches that are available only at Artist’s Block.
“The food I’ve had there so far has been delicious,” said USU music major Jared Daley. “It’s a little on the pricey side but the convenience trumps it for me.”
USU student Colin Eggertz likes how long the café is open—7 a.m. to midnight on weekdays and 10 a.m. to midnight on Saturdays.
“It’s nice that the café is open during same hours the building is,” Eggertz said, “especially when you haven’t had time to go home at night and need something more than a candy bar.”
One problem: the café’s size. The Artist’s Block space was formerly a small vending machine and game room. Marchant would love to expand, but says that will take a while. In the meantime, she said, customers have been OK with finding other places to sit when the café is full.
“The café is fashionable, but not as functional as far as space and seating goes,” Daley said. “The tables are too small and the couch is odd, but it looks good. I really like the chalk board wall, too.”
Artist’s Block will be holding art contests for pictures and paintings to display on the wall each month.
“The design is geared more toward artists,” Marchant said. “But our café is for anyone and everyone who wants to take a break and eat.”
