North Logan library has ‘room to grow’ with new shelves

NORTH LOGAN–Books can rest easy on the new and expanded shelving installed at the North Logan Library last week. “It’s taken such a long time,” library director Marcia Cheney said. “We were running out of book shelf space, and now we have some room to grow.”

Funds for the renovation came from the Thorne Endowment, which awarded the library $30,000 to make improvements wherever they saw fit. Because the majority of the library’s shelving was not providing adequate space and was beginning to bend, new shelving was ideal. The new shelves, costing roughly $27,500, match the main shelving and replace some of the older metal shelves. They were installed by a Salt Lake City company, Space Savers, over a four-day period, Cheney said.

“Space Savers were actually the ones who put in all of our original shelving.”

But Space Savers weren’t the only ones working long hours to complete the renovation. Library staff members spent several hours moving an inventory of over 55,000 books, movies and magazines, and reorganizing them onto the new shelves before the library’s reopening Feb. 27.

“I think it will make it easier to find things when people come in,” Cheney said. “With our old shelves we didn’t always have room to keep duplicates next to each other. People didn’t know to look in a separate place.”

Assistant Library Director Robyn Patterson agreed, “Now if someone is looking for something, it won’t take them a half hour to find it.”

Along with duplicates, paperback and hardback versions can now be kept in the same location, and children’s picture books are no longer in plastic bins, but alphabetized on shelves, making it easier for parents and children to find the books they are looking for.

“It helps us too of course,” Cheney said. “We want people to be able to find what they are looking for and it was hard to do when even we would get confused about where to look for a particular book.”

Cheney and Patterson have decided to use the rest of the money awarded by the Thorne Endowment to upgrade the library’s computer system.
