SMITHFIELD–This city’s Birch Creek Golf Course has provided a top-notch golf experience combined with stunning views of Cache Valley for over 30 years.

The 18-hole year-round course was designed by Bill Hall and Ray Howard and bought by Smithfield city in 1976. Open from dawn to dusk, seven days a week, Birch Creek is geared to be both enjoyable and challenging for golfers. From the longest tees, it features 6,768 yards of golf for a par of 72.

“It’s definitely a challenge if you haven’t golfed before,” Dave Gwilliam, a frequent player at Birch Creek, said. “That’s why I like it though. Golfing here makes me better.”

Eric Kleven, PGA golf professional for the course, makes sure his pro shop is stocked with a full range of balls, gloves, and any essentials a golfer may need.

“Having great customer service is my No. 1 priority at Birch Creek,” Kleven says, “from how we answer the phone, to how we greet customers.”

Chad Daniels, superintendent of the course, keeps Birch Creek in top shape. From April to October, it’s common to have tournaments every weekend at the course. Many of the tournaments are for charity, corporate and church events. Men’s and ladies’ associations host weekly events and the course also hosts six to eight state golf events sanctioned by Utah Golf Association and the Utah PGA.

“The employees are always professional and the course always looks maintained,” Cody Quinn, member of the Men’s Association, said.

Kleven makes sure his employees are friendly and greet every golfer at the door.

“Keep it simple,” Kleven says. “Treat your customer the way you’d want to be treated and offer a product that you’d want to play on.”

Kleven says that the course strives to deliver the best product, and have the best customer service. “We have to make an impression that will stay with every golfer so when they think golf, they think, Birch Creek.”

When asked how long he plans to golf at Birch Creek, Quinn said, “It’s the best golf around. As long as I’m in Cache Valley, I’m golfing at Birch.”

Birch Creek Golf Course is located at 550 E. 100 North in Smithfield and offers daily, season and punch passes for players.
