LOGAN — Winter is here, which means more parking tickets for Logan residents who violate parking laws.

Beginning Nov. 15, the snow removal parking code will come into effect:  No person shall park a vehicle on any street or city-owned parking lot between the hours of 1 a.m. and 6 a.m. on any day until the last day of February, according to Logan Municipal Code 10.52.170.

“Any time anyone parks on the road it poses a problem, because there is a chance that our plows can hit a car,” said Jed Alimari, Logan’s street and storm water manager. “People also get angry because their car has snow piled up around it in the morning.”

Parked cars can also interfere with the time it takes for the city’s 10 snowplows to clear the roads. “Depending on the conditions, it takes eight to 12 hours to clean all the streets including the airport,” Alimari said.

Anyone who violates this law will be sure to find a citation underneath their windshield wipers in the morning. The Logan City Police Department averaged about 50 citations a night during the winter last year.

“We don’t anticipate writing or seeing that many violations this year,” said Lt. Jeff Simmons, parking supervisor. This year Logan city will try and decrease the parking violations by posting a notice on their website, making radio announcements and sending out tweets.

“On the 15th, 16th and 17th we lay down a lot of warnings,” Simmons said. “The citations are $20 but if you haven’t paid before 10 days, they turn into $40.”
