SMITHFIELD — Warm-weather time is winding down for outdoor enthusiasts in Cache Valley, but if you’re still looking for one more fix Smithfield Canyon is a great place to start. With the leaves changing, not only is it a beautiful place to go, there’s a wide variety of things you can do there.

“The canyon is a gorgeous and fun place and some of the greatest hiking trails in the valley are up there, you just have to know where to find them,” said Tyra Simmons, a Smithfield resident and USU student. Simmons said her brother is usually her guide when if comes to finding the best trails.

Not only is this canyon great for hiking, it is equipped with camping sites and a mountain biking trail. Although there is not quite as many camp sites as in other canyons in the valley, they are well-kept and easy to get to.

Garrett Adams, also a Smithfield resident, said the camping spots are mostly located by the creek and are great for bonfires and parties with his friends. Adams also said the canyon is usually not as crowded as others.

This canyon is also a very popular place with runners because of the scenic route and seclusion. Smithfield resident Camille Woodward said the canyon is one of her favorite places to go running, especially at this time of the year.

Dana Whitaker, a USU student from North Logan, also goes to Smithfield Canyon to have bonfires. She recommended watching out for runners while making your way up because “the road gets pretty windy and they seem to just jump out at you.” Whitaker also suggested using a truck if you’re planning on going very far up. She said it can get bumpy once you pass the first few campsites.

“But it’s totally worth the bumpy drive, it’s amazing up there,” Whitaker said.

The trailhead is located at Center Street and 300 East.
