PROVIDENCE—Each spring the South Cache Soccer League facilitates a recreational soccer program for youth of the southern part of the valley. Representatives of SCSL travel to each competing township for registration days where individuals can register and pay fees to join the program.

SoccerThe playing season is scheduled to begin April 9. Residents of Providence and River Heights can register Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Tuesday from 6:30-8:30 p.m at the Providence City Council chambers, 15 S. Main St.

“People have been able to register online since the first part of January,” said Desiree Gunnell, who shares league presidential duties with her husband Scott. “Each town gets its own in-person registration times but these will be the first and only days set aside for the people of Providence and River Heights.”

Desiree Gunnell encourages residents to come to one of the registration days if they have any questions regarding goals and events scheduled by SCSL.

“We have a good amount of online registrations every year but it can definitely be a benefit for people if they want to come in and talk to someone on the registration days,” Gunnell said. “We’re always eager to answer any questions people might have and meet with them face-to-face to get them a clear understanding of the program and what it has to offer.”

The league accommodates youth in several different age groups, Gunnell said. Eligible competitors range from 4 to 18 years old and are divided into groups based upon age and size.

Although they are not official sponsors, some city officials are hopeful for the upcoming soccer season.

“It really does give people in the south of the valley a chance to come together,” said Providence city administrator Skarlet Bankhead. “It unites the people in Providence and allows people to get to know their neighbors. And several of the games are played right here on the Providence fields.”

Gunnell has delegated responsibilities of area coordinator to Susan Folkman.

“This is Susan’s first year as the area coordinator for Providence and River Heights,” Gunnell said. “By the end of it she might be going crazy but hopefully she’ll sail through things like a pro. She’ll be at the registration days to get individuals signed up and taken care of. Any questions they might have can be directed to her at those times.”
