Sundance review: Fight for Your Right Revisited

PARK CITY–You may remember the classic video “Fight for Your Right,” the 1980’s video where the Beastie Boys’ Adam “MCA” Yauch, Mike D., and Ad-Rock crash a nerdy party and liven it up to an extreme. The boys bring the house to chaos and then sneak out. So what happened next? Yauch decided to put together and direct a short movie which rolls out the ensuing chapter.
Fight for Your Right Revisited opens with the boys (Elijah Wood as Ad-Rock., Seth Rogan as Mike D., and Danny McBride as MCA) sneaking down the stairs from the party, immediately running into the parents from the start of the classic video. It takes very little time for the humor to begin unfolding, and for the boys to start tearing things up, quite literally. Wood, Rogan, and McBride played their corresponding Beastie Boys masterfully, making the transition from 25 years previous both believable and thoroughly entertaining. The fun was back, along with the boom boxes, pie jokes, hairdos that should have never been in style, and tons of other ’80’s references.
A supporting cast of Will Farrell, Jack Black, and John C. Reilly made for some great comedic interaction with the boys, including a side-splitting dance competition between the two groups. The dance moves and dialogue among the actors made this short film go by far too quickly. Throw in additional cameos by Rainn Wilson, Will Arnett, Amy Pohler, Orlando Bloom, and Ted Danson, and you would be challenged to keep focused strictly on the main characters throughout the whole film.
In summary, Fight for Your Right Revisited is worth all of the hype that it has generated. Elijah Wood, Seth Rogan, and Danny McBride had a camaraderie that made this throwback film believable, and the abundance of stars made even the background characters fascinating. Thirty minutes left the audience salivating for more.
