LOGAN—With summer coming to an end, why not take man’s best friend out for one last 5k run or jog at the 3rd annual “Sweat for a Pet” fundraiser for the Cache Humane Society this Saturday?

Registration will begin at 8 a.m. at the Logan Fairgrounds, and the run/walk starts at 9. Early registration will get you a free doggy bag and a t-shirt.

Registration for the 1-mile run/walk is $7 and $15 for the 5k run. Organizers are also planning an auction and a small-dog agility course for people to run their loving pooch through. They will also be offering micro-chips, to help find lost dogs, and low-cost vaccinations right on site during the event.

“My daughter Brylie, who is now 13 years old, came up with the idea,” said Jodi DeVries, the Humane Society’s coordinator for the event. “It’s amazing what one person’s dream can do.”

In previous years, this event has raised about $5,000. “Last year we had about 160 walkers and 180 runners,” DeVries said. “We’ve been working on advertising and I’m truly hoping this year we have more.”

After all, as the anonymous writer once said, “If your dog is fat, you’re not getting enough exercise.”

CHS staffer Melissa Walker says that in addition to raising money for the CHS animal shelter on Valley View Highway, the Humane Society hopes people will adopt some pets during the event. “We have about 52 dogs and 50 cats here at any given time,” she said. “All our funds go to taking care of the animals.”

DeVries added that contributions of all kinds, from financial to bags of kibble, are needed and gratefully accepted. “It’s always tough to raise money to take care of these animals, so every donation is always appreciated,” she said.

The Cache Humane Society is 100 percent non-profit. They take in all kinds of animals, from rabbits to rats and dogs and cats. All funds from the Sweat for a Pet event will go towards buying food for the animals as well as litter for the cats.

For more information on the Cache Humane Society, to volunteer, offer contributions or to find out more about Saturday’s Sweat for a Pet, visit the website, call the shelter at 435-792-3920, or stop by the shelter on Valley View Highway (2370 W. 200 North), three miles west of downtown Logan. Shelter hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday-Friday, and 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays.
