LOGAN — Bear River Health Department now has swine flu vaccine but is temporarily out of seasonal flu shots.

FluMist for seasonal flu is still available for healthy individuals aged 2-49, said Jill Parker, public information officer for the BRHD. She said there should be a new shipment of the seasonal flu vaccine coming in the first part of November. This year there are two flu vaccines, Parker said. There is the seasonal flu vaccine and also the H1N1/swine flu vaccine.

Today the health department’s H1N1 vaccine arrived, and administering the vaccine began at 2 p.m., she said. The H1N1 vaccine came in the form of a flu mist, with 1,800 doses. There will be shipments of new doses each week. It is hard to speculate whether Bear River will run out of the H1N1 vaccines as well, Parker said.

Health department employees are encouraging individuals to check with their personal health care providers to see where else they can find available seasonal flu vaccines, Parker said.

“The vaccine is only one piece of preventing the spread of the flu,” she said. There are other steps that can be taken to prevent contracting the flu. These include washing hands, covering your mouth while coughing, and staying at home when sick, she said.

According to Bear River Health Department’s Web site, people who should get the seasonal flu vaccine are children, pregnant women, people over the age of 50, people with chronic medical conditions, home caregivers, and health care workers.
