USU journalists win big in Top of the Rockies; Powell lands 4 firsts

DENVER—USU journalists were tearing up the annual Top of the Rockies competition for journalistic excellence among professional journalists at the annual regional conference of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) on Friday night.

2011 JCOM alumna Storee Powell is bringing home six “Rockies,” including four first-place awards, for her reporting in professional categories for both Utah Public Radio and online news stories on CacheValleyDaily.com.

Fellow 2011 JCOM graduate Rachel Christensen also added a first-place prize in the arts & entertainment category for her work on CacheValleyDaily.com, and JCOM assistant professor Matthew LaPlante won two Rockies for his freelance work with Salt Lake City Weekly: first place for feature writing and third for investigative/enterprise reporting.

The Top of the Rockies Awards recognize the best journalistic work by professional journalists in SPJ Region 9, which includes Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming.
