USU women’s soccer hosts new tournament

February 24th, 2015 Posted in Sports

The Utah State University women’s soccer team held a new off-season tournament Saturday against teams from three other schools. The tournament, which provided an opportunity for the teams to play during a time usually limited to conditioning and single-team practice, was held in the Stan Laub Indoor Training Center on campus.

The visiting schools included Weber State University, Idaho State University and Utah Valley University.

Each team was split in two, which allowed players to get as much time on the field as possible.

“My team of seven beat everyone, and we won so that was fun,” said junior Lexie Henrie, a left defender for USU. “At the end, they had a little trophy for us.”

The tournament introduced a break from the standard spring training regimen, which usually consists of a few games and regular conditioning.

“We do practice every day,” Henrie said. “Then we lift twice a week too, so they keep us busy.”

Bailee Hammond, a freshman midfielder and defender, said the tournament brought a new element to the team’s training.

“It’s always nice to have a change of scenery and play other teams,” Hammond said. “By playing other teams, we are able to see what is successful and what we need to work on more.”

The tournament has not been viable in the past due to conflicting spring break schedules among the universities.

According to Henrie, this year’s weather played a role in the tournament’s conception.

“Our coach just wanted to do something that was at our school,” Henrie said. “Usually we don’t do anything because of the snow.”

Though Henrie would like to see more teams attend in the future, she said she was pleased with the event and looks forward to participating in future USU-hosted tournaments.

“It was a different kind of aspect to the game,” Henrie said. “I’m sure we’ll do it again in the future, cause a lot of people had fun.”
