What if they gave an election and nobody came? ‘No need,’ says Mendon mayor

MENDON – Yesterday was Election Day 2015 for Cache Valley and the rest of the nation, but not in Mendon.
“There were three council seats open and only three people filed,” Mayor Ed Buist said. “There was no need for the election.”
City Council incumbents Kelly Barrett, Greg Taylor and Shawn Osborne were up for reelection, but only Barrett and Taylor filed as candidates by the June 8 deadline. Write-in candidate Karole Sorenson fills the third vacant Council seat.
Buist said no other items were on the ballot, rendering the election unnecessary.
The City Council canceled the general municipal elections in September because all open positions would be filled.
City Recorder Paul Cressall released an official statement on Mendon’s website following the cancellation: “Notice is hereby given that the Mendon City General Municipal Election, to have been held on Tuesday, November 3, 2015, is canceled by Mendon City Resolution 2015-04, and Kelly Barrett, Karole Sorensen and Greg Taylor are declared elected to the Mendon City Council. The election is canceled because the number of candidates for the Mendon City Council is equal to the number of at-large positions to be filled.”
Sorenson, Barrett and Taylor will be sworn in on Jan. 6.
