Valley soccer rivalry kicks off with Sky View girls over Logan, 3-1

LOGAN — In the first rivalry game of the season, the Sky View Bobcats’ girls soccer team came away with a 3-1 victory over long-time rival, the Logan Grizzlies, Thursday at Logan High School.
With vuvuzelas roaring — the two-foot long horns that gained fame during the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa — and fans cheering for their favorite team, the intensity of the game was felt by the coaches and players.
“It’s always an intense rivalry,” said Doyle Geddes, head coach for the Bobcats, “so anytime you can walk off their field with a victory, it’s always a great feeling.”
Mike Mudrow, head coach for the Grizzlies, said the Logan vs. Sky View match is always a big game that brings lots of crowd enthusiasm.
Madison Siddoway, who plays forward for the Bobcats, said she felt the energy that the fans brought to the game and was impressed with how many Sky View students were in attendance. “It was awesome to have our community and our students supporting,” she said. “We always have our students come out to big rivalry games like Logan and Mountain Crest, we love it.”
With home field advantage, the Grizzlies were first on the scoreboard when Demi Lopez, midfielder for Logan, sent in a free kick from 20 yards out, just over the reach of Sam Loosli, goalkeeper for the Bobcats. But after that goal, it was all Sky View.
Seven minutes later Randi Davis, forward for the Bobcats, tied the game 1-1 when the Grizzlies goalkeeper, Sam Aguilar blocked a shot from Emma Larson, but couldn’t hold onto it and Davis who stayed with the play was able to tap the ball in.
Coming in after halftime, Geddes said his team made a few adjustments on offense in hopes to put more pressure on the Grizzlies’ defense.
“The girls executed flawlessly out of the change, it worked to a ‘T,'” he said.
Just like Geddes had planned, 10 minutes into the new half Siddoway took advantage of a pass from teammate Hailey Neild. Siddoway used her head to bounce the ball over Aguilar and continued her pursuit for the net and sent the ball in, giving her team a 2-1 advantage.
“It felt good to finally get the ball in the net,” Siddoway said. “Just to battle and get it in there, I think we really needed that to elevate us up and give us the lead.”
Siddoway said she was happy that she scored a game changing goal, but said she was more excited to get a victory as a team. “It doesn’t really matter who put the ball in the net, as long as we’re winning games,” she said.
And with the momentum that came from Siddoway’s goal, the Bobcats were able to lock away the game.
“I think our enthusiasm and energy picked up from there and I was really proud of my team to pick it up,” Siddoway said. “Everyone wanted to win the game and you could really feel that.”
Sky View continued to put pressure on the Logan defense and on a free kick by Kilee Lamb, Sammy Guadarrama was able to head the ball into the net untouched. Giving the Bobcats a two point lead that the Grizzlies would never be able to recover from.
Geddes said the way Guadarrama executed — not only off the free kick but during the entire game — made her the stand-out player of the night. “She is just a work horse, she worked hard for 80 minutes,” he said. “That header was a sheer hustle and determination play.”
Guadarrama said she saw the opportunity to make a play and wanted to capitalize on it.
“I just saw the kick coming in and I really wanted another goal,” she said. “I just dove in there and gave it my all, it felt good.”
Even though his team lost, Mudrow said he was proud of the way they played.
“That was the best game they’ve played all season, they played really well and moved the ball well,” he said. “I thought they played just as well or better than Sky View.”
Mudrow said he is looking forward to when his team will face the Bobcats again and said they will be more prepared next time.
“They should watch out, because we are going to come just as hard as we did.”
