3-dog kennel gets thumbs’ up from Wellsville
February 24th, 2011 Posted in OpinionWELLSVILLE — The Planning Commission unanimously approved a conditional use permit for a three-dog kennel Wednesday. “We’re a three-dog family,” Jonathan Fielding said. He currently has two dogs and wants to get another.
“There’s not going to be any breeding. All the dogs will be spayed or neutered,” Fielding said. His largest dog is a Labrador.
Larry Richman lives two houses down from Fielding, and said Fielding’s dogs have been good company. “I don’t have any complaints about them,” Richman said.
Fielding said he has received only a few complaints about his dogs barking. Richman said the Golden Retriever next door to Fielding makes more noise than Fielding’s dogs. The commission approved the request under the condition that Fielding does whatever he has to do to keep the barking under control.
Commissioner Loyal Green said, while he doesn’t object to Fielding having dogs, “I do object if they create a nuisance for the neighbors.”
Commissioner Kent Larsen said there was plenty of room for the dogs to run around on Fielding’s property, which is completely fenced. Fielding said the dogs are kept outside during the day and inside during the night year-round.
“I wish all of our citizens would be as conscientious,” Commissioner Russell Glenn said.
In other business, the commission discussed future training sessions on land use, decisions, and decision makers. “You can never receive too much training,” Green said.
