SALT LAKE CITY—A Utah State University student was named the Best PR Student in Utah this morning following a  competition among college and university public relations students from across the state.

Senior Natalie Curtis was one of six finalists in the competition, sponsored and conducted by Richter7, a full-service media, marketing and communications company in Salt Lake.

Curtis, from Wooster, Ohio, is president of USU’s True Blue Communications, a student-run professional public relations agency. She won in a case-study competition against four students from BYU and one from Westminster College. This year’s competition involved a challenge to polish up actor Charlie Sheen’s image.

“It really was a challenge,” Curtis said.

This is the second straight year that an Aggie JCOM student has won the prestigious student PR contest at Richter7, the oldest such competition in Utah. Over the eight years of Richter7’s competition, USU students have won five times. In 2010, JCOM students Courtney Lewis and Lisa Janssen finished one-two in the statewide contest.

“We are incredibly proud of Natalie and all our PR students,” said Ted Pease, head of the Department of Journalism & Communication. “When we say we’re a professional program, we mean it. Natalie’s performance shows that our students really know their stuff.”

More details to follow.
