LOGAN—Storee Powell, 2011 summa cum laude JCOM Graduate of the Year, is the only Utah State University student journalist whose regional Mark of Excellence Award winner has won a Society of Professional Journalists national award.

Her piece for Utah Public Radio was named one of the three top student radio news stories in the United States by the nation SPJ in Indianapolis.

Powell won four regional Mark of Excellence Awards at the Intermountain West Society of Professional Journalists conference in Salt Lake City in April, including a first place for her UPR story, “Circle the Wagons,” which this week has been named a national award-winner.

The Society of Professional Journalist announcement:

Congratulations!  Your student’s 2010 Mark of Excellence submission, Circle the Wagons, has been designated as a NATIONAL FINALIST in the Radio News Reporting-4 Year College/University category!

Mark of Excellence Award national finalist(s): Storee Powell

National Mark of Excellence Award judges choose one national winner in each category and two national finalists (runners-up).

To see a full list of winners and finalists, check out the MOE Award showcase or the press release.

SPJ encourages your university/college or journalism school to recognize your Mark of Excellence winners and finalists in some way. This recognition could take place at a graduation ceremony or some other event.

The Mark of Excellence certificates will be mailed in late June.

Please congratulate your student(s) on a job well done!
