LOGAN — Utah State University made a good comeback to their season during Saturday’s Homecoming game at Romney Stadium. Southern Utah University kept the Aggies on their toes, but in the end Aggies bested the Thunderbirds, 53-34.

Head Coach for USU, Gary Andersen, said he wasn’t happy about the penalties played against USU during the game, but overall said it was a well-deserved win.

“We’ll take a lot of positives from this game,” Andersen said, ”and learn from our negatives.

“We have a lot of work ahead of us, but we’ll come back tomorrow swinging.” He said.

Andersen used to coach the Thunderbirds in 2003. It was a big game and a big win for the Aggies, with the most points gained for USU since the 56-43 win against Weber State in 2001.

Robert Turbin, running back for USU, made another 100-yard rushing game for the third time in a row since Emmett White in 2000. Through the course of the game, Turbin caught four passes over 116 yards and made two touchdowns.

USU’s running back duo Turbin and Michael Smith helped to boost the Aggie’s offense in taking over 500 yards during the course of the game.

“Coaches think we make a good one-two punch.” Turbin said.

Smith walked out of the game with two touchdowns on eight carries. Diondre Borel assisted a touchdown with 54-yard pass to Smith near the end of the second quarter, giving Aggies a 14-3 lead.

It was a tough match with Thunderbirds beginning the first quarter with a 3-0 lead against the Aggies.

USU flipped the score on the Thunderbirds with a 14-3 lead by the end of the first quarter and kept climbing with a 21-3 within the first minute of the second quarter.

“SUU is a tough team,” Andersen said, “they fought like crazy—they should be very proud of themselves.”

The game continued with Aggies leading the Thunderbirds through the last three quarters of the game.

“If you look at the stats we made 66 snaps for 604 yards, if you do the math on that, that’s off the charts production wise,” Andersen said, “it’s about these kids and they deserved to win this game.

“I’m excited to get them back here and do everything in my power as their head football coach to get them in a good position to compete in every football game.”
