Benson residents warn County Council: New subdivision is in flood area

LOGAN–Residents of Benson expressed concern about a 4-lot subdivision being built in a high water table area Tuesday night at the Cache County Council meeting.

Sherilyn Johnson said the water sitting on top of the septic tanks would prevent them from working during the spring months. She stated that the water can get so deep that boating around the area of the S Curve Subdivision does occur.

“This is also an agricultural area” Kelby Johnson remarked. “You can’t just go taking cookie-cutter chunks out of the valley.” He said that the pollution of the area is bad enough and asked why add to it. Among the council there was also concern expressed about the fog that envelopes the area and how putting more homes up could increase the traffic and the risk of an accident occurring.

The council also asked about if there was drainage possible around the homes if they were built. Sherilyn Johnson said that because of all the fences, yards and driveways in the area, a lot of drainage couldn’t happen. She said that sometimes the water can sit for so long that some of the wheat planted does end up dying.

“It’s obvious this wasn’t tested at the right time of the year,” Councilman Jon White said

Many members agreed that maybe the Health Department needs to take another look and possibly re-run their tests to insure the septic tanks would work. Sherilyn Johnson said that it would be in the best interest for future land and home owners to do so.

In other discussions, the council went over procedures for issuing permits and applications for special events and considered donating or selling gravel for future irrigation projects in the county. There was also a brief speech given about elected officials accepting gifts and what they should avoid.
