HYRUM- — The Cache County Sheriff’s Office has released the names of the victim and suspect in Tuesday’s shooting.  The victim was Robert J. Van Hemert, 37,  of Hyrum, who was fatally shot in the chest at his home. The suspect is Aaron Smith, 40, of Provo.

No arrests have been made, said CCSO Lt. Mike Peterson in a press release, as the investigation is “still in full swing.”

According to the press release, Smith admitted at the scene to being the individual who fired the gun, and surrendered to the first responding deputies immediately.

A 911 call was placed just after 4:20 p.m. Oct. 14, reporting that a disturbance had taken place inside the home on the corner of 50 North and 600 East and gunshots had been fired.

“Investigators have determined that an argument took place in the home over property issues,” Peterson said. “Evidence exists that at one point in the argument Van Hemert introduced a handgun at which time Smith responded with a handgun of his own. Shots were fired that impacted Van Hemert, resulting in his death.”

Smith was taken into custody and detained as the investigation continues.
