City Council votes to expand River Heights with annexation

RIVER HEIGHTS – The city of River Heights is one step closer to officially annexing land. It is located north of 600 South and is bordered by 1000 East.

“We’re taking county land, and it’s becoming part of River Heights,” said City Recorder Sheila Lind.

City Council voted unanimously to adopt a resolution accepting Dan Hogan’s petition to annex a piece of land into River Heights, in order for him to start the development of a housing community. However, this is only one of the first steps in the long process of annexing land.

Lind explained to the council that the annexation proposal must go through a 30-day protest period before coming up before the council again. At that council meeting, the public will have a chance to voice their opinions. Then, the annexation can be officially adopted.

The annexation will also include the part of 600 South that the land touches. “We’re going to expand the road, too,” said Councilman Rich Okelberry.

Expanding the road is necessary because it is narrow right now, and once homes are built and sold, traffic is expected to increase.

Once the annexation is official, the land must be rezoned into a residential area by the Planning and Zoning Committee, Lind said.
