Community ‘dashes’ for chocolate at nursing facility open house

The grand re-opening of the Logan Transitional Rehabilitation and Skilled Nursing Facility on Wednesday was not a traditional open house.
“I recognized that open houses can be dry, sterile and boring,” said Paul Arnell, the facility’s executive director. “We needed something that would show off the facility and convince people to go down the halls.”
His solution: chocolate.
The “Chocolate Dash” consisted of three tables located throughout the facility. Each featured an abundance of chocolates for guests to snack on while touring and learning about the recently updated building.
The renovations started in late 2013 and were completed earlier this year. Remodels were done to several of the resident rooms, along with the main lobby. New flooring was installed throughout the facility and all new furniture was put in place.
“It’s a 28-year-old building and with that comes 28 years of problems,” Arnell said. “Our patients deserve to have a nice place to come, look at and stay.”
The facility provides post-acute rehabilitative inpatient services.
“We are both a rehab center and a skilled nursing facility,” Arnell said. “We provide long-time services for people who can’t make it to an assisted living home.”
The facility has 60 rooms and is able to house up to 78 patients at any given time.
“Most rehab residents stay for about 20 to 30 days,” said Marti Walker, the facility’s patient care coordinator. “Just until they get feeling better or stronger after a medical set back of some kind.”
The open house lasted for two hours and around 200 guests from the Cache Valley community toured the facility — and ate chocolate.
