MILLVILLE – The Miss Millville Pageant has been rescheduled from April 27 to May 23 due to lack of participants, as well as interference of the Mountain Crest High School junior prom.

The pageant is a longstanding tradition for the city for more than twenty years. Council member Mark Williams, his wife Karrie and Suzie Simmons have been assigned to help put on this special event.

“Miss Millville is a unique pageant. It is not a beauty contest,” said Williams. “There is no competition. Any girl that is a junior in high school and resides in Millville is allowed to participate.”

With only five contestants thus far, Williams hopes that more girls will show interest before the time of the event.

“I think a lot of girls were caught up in getting ready for prom and just didn’t know about it,” explained pageant assistant Suzie Simmons. “We hadn’t heard from any girls before our last deadline but we’re hopeful now that we can get the word out and advertise better so more girls can participate.”

Simmons was a participant in the pageant herself some time ago. She recalled that back then there was a winner and first and second attendants.

The pageant follows a fairly traditional format with each girl displaying a formal dress or evening gown accompanied by a talent or skill. If participants are good singers or dancers for example, they will perform a number at the pageant. If their skills are more athletic, art based or intellectual accomplishments, then a display on a table is presented.

All of the participants will be awarded with crowns and flowers and most important of all, the opportunity to represent Millville on the float for various parades. Each girl’s parents write a bio to help introduce them. The pageant begins promptly at 7:30 p.m. at the Providence South Stake Center. All are welcome to come.
