LOGAN – Months of planning and physical labor is paying dividends. The Logan Canal Construction project presented a progress report to the Cache County Council Tuesday.

“People have been good,” Councilman John White said. “(Whittaker Construction) is trying to do public relations work as they go, and there’s been lots of compliments.”

Zan Murray presented the progress to date, which included the financial costs for the sixth and final segment of the project being finalized Wednesday. Murray said that the costs have gone forward as anticipated, and that the project as a whole has been progressing quickly.

“It’s very labor intensive,” Murray said. “There’s 20 guys up there working at any given time, and they have to do 270 feet at a time.”

Among the concerns brought up by community members is the reasoning behind road closures at certain points along the canal construction route. Murray addressed these concerns saying that having pedestrians and public traffic moving through is a safety hazard.

Murray also reported that the company has been proactive in communicating and working with the general public, sending flyers in the mail, doing door-to-door visits and conducting face meetings to address the concerns individuals may have.

The 1500 North pipeline segment of the project was reported 100 percent in place, with a 42-inch PVC pipe being placed approximately 14 feet under the ground. Murray said they estimate that all six segments of the project will be complete and functional by the end of May 2013.
