LOGAN – It’s Herberger’s grand opening at the Cache Valley Mall, and the burst of activity is attracting shoppers to see what this new department store has to offer. On Sept. 10, Herberger’s opened its doors.

But though they are excited, many in the community are worried that the store will not stay in business and become one of Logan’s many ghosts of department stores past.

“I have opened several stores in the 16 years I have worked for Herberger’s,” said Ron Soucie, general manager of the Logan store. “This is probably the most gorgeous store I have ever helped open. We gutted this building and started from scratch. There are very few remnants of the past in this building.”

Herberger’s has 265 stores located all across the country, boasting locations in 25 states, he said. The Herberger’s at the Cache Valley Mall will be the first one in Utah.

“It was a corporate initiative,” Soucie said. “After extensive research we discovered that Logan was a good fit for our company demographically. It has our target customers.” Herberger’s is very experienced in the market that Cache Valley has to offer, he said, calling the store a “hybrid.” Soucie said Herberger’s offers good quality along with big savings.

Customers are hoping that Soucie is right, because shopping choices in Cache Valley in the recent past have been very slim.

“It’s just been department store after department store here,” said Samantha Davis, a Herberger’s customer from North Logan. “I am just wondering how long Herberger’s is going to last. I am sick of driving to Salt Lake City to shop.”

Pauline Abbott, also from North Logan, is keeping hopeful. “I think if they keep having good sales and offering a good variety of items, they will be able to do well.”

Despite a few wary customers, Herberger’s is set on keeping its doors open here in Logan.

“I love seeing cars in this parking lot,” Soucie said. “Let’s keep it this way.”
