Domestic abuse is rising, official tells county council

LOGAN–The Cache County Council was given a quick overview about the Children’s Victim Special Report by Terryl Warner Tuesday night.
The organization has been putting a lot of interest in the Child Abduction Report Training (CART) program, which is provided four times a year in the Cache Valley area. In the case of a missing child in the area, even though more people step forward to help than any other crisis, you will have to be certified.
Warner emphasized that child abuse, property crimes and domestic disturbance are up, and that many of these problems seem to start over money issues.
There have been serious financial crimes in the area. Warner said. “I have no idea where they begin, it’s in the millions,” she said when the topic of how much was touched.
Something new that will be starting up, Warner said, is a class for teenagers called Alive at 25 that will be about four hours long. They are hoping to encourage a lot of younger drivers to take the course.
They are also trying to make more people aware that drowsy driving is still a problem. “We had a lot of incidences this past year in the canyon,” Warner stated.
Utah has been working on getting a bill passed that says if someone driving carelessly causes a fatal accident, they will not just get a fine, work hours or jail time, but they will also end up losing their license to drive. Warner stated that many families of victims will find more resolution in this serious decision.
There has been a lot of positive feedback with making people aware how serious texting while driving is. Oprah Winfrey will be doing another show dealing with the No Phone Zone. She put up a pledge about not having a phone in your car on Jan. 18 of last year.
The council was also given a quick report from the Chamber of Commerce about businesses in our economy. “We are looking to get bigger and better; we’ve trimmed expenses and expanded our services,” director Sandy Emile said.
