HYDE PARK — Brett and Zellene Allred wanted to find a way to give back to the community that supported them through the death of their son, Michael, who was killed in a suicide car bombing in Fallujah, Iraq, on Sept. 6, 2004.  So, in 2006, they created the Lance Corporal Michael J. Allred Scholarship Foundation in Michael’s memory.

“We mainly wanted to say thank you to our community, to our city of Hyde Park and Cache Valley,” Brett Allred said. The Allred family has lived in Hyde Park for 20 years.

Michael Allred enlisted in the Marine Corps in January 2001, shortly after graduating from Sky View High School. He excelled and became the first in his School of Infantry class to achieve the rank of lance corporal.

“His officers had a lot of good to say about his leadership. He could be counted on to look after his men,” Michael’s father said.

Any incoming high school graduates or students currently attending Utah State University and pursuing their undergraduate degree are eligible to apply for the scholarship. According to the scholarship website, www.mjallredscholarship.org , students “must be in good academic standing and will be selected on the basis of high personal integrity, academic performance, service to campus and community, potential and vision, and financial need.” Applicants need not be U.S. citizens.

Applications are due on March 1. They can be found on the scholarship website and can be sent to:
