Get lost! Valley’s corn mazes provide Halloween fun
October 30th, 2013 Posted in Arts and LifeWELLSVILLE — There are many Halloween activities available in Cache Valley; one of them is getting lost in a corn maze.
The American West Heritage Center and Little Bear Bottoms, both located in Wellsville, have been providing Halloween themed entertainment during the month of October. A third, the Green Canyon corn maze, went out of business last year to make way for a new public school.
Both organizations have kept most of their mazes and activities the same with some minor changes being made from last year. The AWHC changes the pattern of their maze every year while Little Bear Bottoms’ maze has changed the structure of their maze, but it does not form a pattern.

“This year the management decided to design the maze as a team of horses, or at least the heads of horses,” said Luke Bankhead, an AWHC employee. “They change it each year but they still try to keep with the theme of western culture.” The AWHC closed its haunted corn maze last weekend but will continue offering the other corn mazes and related activities until Nov. 1.
“We have added a few activities in addition to the corn maze,” said Rebecca Getz, AWHC marketing manager. “We have a blackout maze, straw maze, straw jump, gourd launcher, BB guns, tomahawk throwing, a giant slide, train rides, as well as pony and wagon rides. We added all these activities to enhance the corn maze experience and to engage patrons of all ages.”
Besides its corn maze, Little Bear Bottoms offers a Spooky Barn Ride and a Haunted River Trail. They also have a smaller corn maze and a straw fort for children.
“My friends and I just did the corn maze and I thought it was hard to get out which is the whole point of corn mazes, so that was fun,” Judd said. “The thing I didn’t like was that it wasn’t haunted. I’ve found that corn mazes are a bit boring if they aren’t haunted.”
Each organization designed its mazes to get customers lost, so it takes a while to find a way out. According to Little Bear Bottom’s website, the large corn maze can take as long as an hour and a half to get through. AWHC stated that it usually takes people 45 minutes to an hour to get through their maze.
“It was pretty scary when we were lost in the dark,” said Chelsey Lloyd about AWHC’s corn maze. “We got lost in the horse’s head for like a half an hour and I began to think we were never going to get out of there.”
Both businesses offer combo packages which include admission to their corn mazes as well as their other activities. The AWHC’s combo pass for all activities is $10 while the corn maze alone is $6. Little Bear Bottoms is also $6 for the corn maze with two different combo passes. To gain admission to all activities is $12 and $10 for the corn mazes and the Spooky Barn Ride. Discounts are available for kids, students, seniors, and military personnel with ID.
Little Bear Bottoms is open Monday-Thursday 5-10 p.m., Friday 5-11 p.m. and Saturday 1-11 p.m. The AWHC’s corn maze hours are Monday-Thursday 1-10 p.m., Friday 1-11 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m.-11 p.m.
