Golden Corral closes; N. Logan worried about dwindling economic base
December 12th, 2015 Posted in OpinionNORTH LOGAN — After 15 years of business, Golden Corral has joined the group of failed North Logan restaurants. The buffet restaurant at 2044 N. Main St. closed its doors Wednesday.
In recent years, North Logan has lost Winger’s Roadhouse Grill, Aggy’s Sports Grill, Hamilton’s Steak and Seafood, and now Golden Corral. However, the city has recently welcomed Javier’s Authentic Mexican Food and Logan Steakhouse.
Ashley Nielson, a Golden Corral server for the past 10 years, said the restaurant’s closing was “unexpected” for everyone – she was not informed of the news until the restaurant’s last night of business.
“I got to know a lot of really neat people while working there,” Nielson said. “Some I would see daily and weekly – over the years they became like family. I guess the business wasn’t making enough money, though. It didn’t make sense, economically, to stay open.”
The high turnover for restaurants in North Logan has been a large concern for the city. Economic development was a big topic of conversation for city council candidates during elections this past November, but has been on the back-burner since.
The City Council members have discussed how to resolve the city’s issues with commercial development. Kristen Anderson suggested the council seek expert advice on what to do with what used to be Aggy’s, Winger’s and now Golden Corral. Roger Anderson suggested reaching out to the property owners and helping them find a “vision” for the spaces. Damon Cann suggested a real-estate agent.
