LOGAN–Christopher Curtis, 25, pleaded guilty Nov. 22 to unlawful killing of protected wildlife, a class B misdemeanor.

Curtis told Judge Clint Judkins that he and a friend had come across some wild ducks and pheasants at a lake and decided to hunt a few of them. “I had gone duck hunting earlier and had no luck in hitting any of the game,” Curtis said. “I was ecstatic to get another chance.”

Curtis shot and killed two pheasants and three ducks on Nov. 6, , unaware that killing more than two ducks a day was against the law in the state of Utah. “I shot one too many,” Curtis said.

His attorney, Tony Baird, told the court, “This was obviously just a kid who made a mistake. Seeing as he has no past criminal record, all we ask for is a fine with no jail time.”

Judge Judkins sentenced Curtis with a $100 fine to be paid immediately and no jail time. He also recommended that Curtis enroll in a hunters’ awareness class to teach him the proper hunting laws for Utah.
