JCOM Scholarships for 2012-13. Deadline: April 2

February 26th, 2012 Posted in Opinion

LOGAN—The Department of Journalism & Communication is soliciting applications from its best & brightest for scholarship support for the 2012-2012 academic year. Last year, a total of $21,000 in scholarships was awarded to 20 of our best students (and another 26 were named Outstanding in some way or another). We don’t yet know the total for this year’s awards, but we do know that if you don’t apply, you can’t win.

• See the story about last year’s winners . . . JCOM celebrates its outstanding students, awards 2011-12 scholarships

Scholarships will be announced at the 2013 JCOM Awards Banquet & Flea Market, Thursday, April 12, 2012, 5-9 p.m., Hamilton’s Steak & Seafood, North Logan (buy your tickets ASAP—only $15, and space is limited. Any JCOM major who can play the bagpipes or perform the Battle Hymn of the Republic as a one-man band (live, no video) gets in free.)

NOTE: Tell your parents, if they’re interested, to come to the Banquet and stop by the shiny new JCOM Open House Building Tour from 1-4 p.m.

The 2012-2013 JCOM Scholarship application forms will be ready this week, maybe. But you don’t need no stinkin’ form, so don’t wait.

TO APPLY: Submit by APRIL 2 . . .
• Formal letter of no more than 300 words, typed, addressed to the JCOM Scholarship Committee outlining your skills, talents, experience and specific goals in college and professional mass communication. What do you want to be when you grow up, and why? Also as part of this letter, name one media professional whose work you admire or despise, and why (briefly). Include full contact information, including email and phone, and your A#.
• An unofficial copy of your transcript.
• No more than six samples of your media work (newspaper/web clippings, web URLs, video, photos, dogs&ponies, press releases, etc.) that demonstrate your ability and potential.
• The names of three communication professionals and/or professors (including one from JCOM) who can vouch for your excellence. Include their full names, titles and contact information.

JCOM scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic achievement AND professional accomplishment and potential.

Students who will graduate in December 2013 are eligible. Make your graduation plans clear in your cover letter.

Small Print: Scholarship recipients will have their awards credited to their Financial Aid accounts only after they have written a nice letter of thanks to their scholarship donors, delivered with stamped envelope to the JCOM office (for proofreading). Scholarship winners also will be asked to volunteer their time/expertise to support the department during the 2012-2013 academic year—write a story for the department newsletter or HNC about some JCOM topic, create a video about JCOM, help with the Communicators Guild or alumni outreach activities, etc. These to be negotiated with the department head.
