KUDOS! USU journalism students win 12 Mark of Excellence Awards
March 15th, 2011 Posted in OpinionLOGAN—The national Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) has announced that Utah State University journalism students have combined to win 12 Mark of Excellence Awards for their 2010 work on the Hard News Café, Utah Public Radio, and ATV News.
The awards, marking the best student work at colleges and universities in the Intermountain West will be presented at the Region 9 SPJ annual convention at the University of Utah on April 8-9.
The awards best all-around TV Newscast for ATV News’ magazine program “Cache Rendezvous,” produced by students in the Journalism and Communication Department’s Newscast 1&2 classes, taught by Penny Byrne, Dean Byrne and Brian Champagne; four for Storee Powell in both radio and online journalism; three for Landon Hemsley for his work on UPR; two for Caresa Alexander for stories appearing on the Hard News Café; and one each, a HNC feature by Satenik Sargsyan and a photo essay on HNC by Dana Ivins.
“We’re very proud of our newshounds,” said JCOM department head Ted Pease. “The fact that the winners come in online journalism, TV news, photography and radio speaks to the diverse skills of our students.”
“And five awards coming for student work on Utah Public Radio points out the importance of our partnership with UPR,” he said.

• Best All-Around Television Newscast: ATV News/Cache Rendezvous
• Online News: Storee Powell, Hard News Café—Bridgerland Literacy board bars press and public; and Storee Powell, Hard News Café—Wellsville house fire blamed on leaking propane tank on barbecue grille
• Online News Reporting: Satenik Sargsyan, Hard News Café—Gay and LDS: ‘Are there not very many people like us?’
• Online Feature Reporting: Caresa Alexander, Hard News Café, BAM! Hunter ed class about more than shooting; and Caresa Alexander, Hard News Café—Peace movement alive & well in Cache Valley
• General News Photography: Dana Ivins, Hard News Café—Holi Festival
• Radio News: Storee Powell, Utah Public Radio—Circle the Wagons; and Storee Powell, Utah Public Radio—Run for Congo Women
• Radio Feature: Landon Hemsley, Utah Public Radio—USU Clinic Helps the Disadvantaged; and Landon Hemsley, Utah Public Radio—Corinne, Utah, Historical Pageant
• Radio Sports: Landon Hemsley, Utah Public Radio—Utah Refugee All-Stars soccer team
The awards will be presented at the annual Region 9 SPJ Conference in Salt Lake City on April 8-9 at the University of Utah.
The Society of Professional Journalists is the nation’s largest association of professional and student journalists. Region 9 includes Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, New Mexico and parts of Texas. First-place award winners move on to compete against other regional winners at the national SPJ Conference in October.
