Media professionals, JCOM alums return to campus for Career Day

April 11th, 2011 Posted in Arts and Life

LOGAN—The Department of Journalism & Communication at Utah State University brings more than a dozen media professionals—from newspapers, radio stations, public relations, TV and the Web—to campus this week for  JCOM Career Day 2011.

This year’s event focuses on strategies for keeping up with a fast-changing communication marketplace, in which dynamic technological evolution and a weak economy mean that media professionals need more tools and flexibility to survive.

The opening panel illustrates that theme—“Moving Target: (Re)Inventing Your Media Career” brings together six media professionals, all USU JCOM alumni, who started in one industry and have moved to a different but related career. The goal is to offer advice and networking opportunities for current students from former students and other friends of USU’s JCOM program.

The media professionals will help students brainstorm, network and strategize on positioning themselves for success in a dynamic, changing and converging media market.

In the afternoon, the professionals sit down one-on-one with JCOM students to critique their résumés and professional portfolios, and to offer mentoring and advice in preparing for the job hunt after graduation.
