National Public Radio news ombudsman visits USU
October 5th, 2010 Posted in OpinionLOGAN—When radio listeners have trouble with the news they hear on National Public Radio, they call Alicia Shepard to complain.
Shepard is the ombudsman for NPR, based in Washington, D.C. When a listener in Logan, Utah, or Moscow, Russia, takes exception with the way the news comes through public radio, Shepard takes the call. She is the only ombudsman for an electronic news outlet in America.
On campus as a guest of Utah Public Radio and the Journalism & Communication Department at USU, Shepard visited classes yesterday, and today appears on UPR’s “Access Utah” show, and delivers a major talk on “The Promise and Perils of Social Media” at noon in the USU Performance Hall. “The Internet is completely changing the news industry,” Shepard says. “Not often are you aware of the revolution right when you are in the midst of it. But we are.”
