New names in Nibley: City manager Zook and municipal judge Cook
April 20th, 2012 Posted in OpinionNIBLEY — The City Council voted unanimously Thursday to approve David Zook as city manager and Trevor Cook as judge of the city’s justice court.
After 15 years, Larry Anhder is retiring as city manager and Zook is taking his place. “I’m really enjoying it so far,” Zook said. “We have a really good team here.”
Zook said he will be building relationships and sharing information with city managers from across the state to find ways to improve his work.
Mayor Gerald Knight said there were five applicants for the position of justice court judge.
“They were all incredible candidates,” Knight said. “I thought with interviewing them in person it would be a snap.” Knight said he thought one would rise to the top quickly, and one did; it just took longer than he expected.
“The quality of the candidates was remarkable,” Knight said. “It gives merit to who [Cook] is because I think he is the best of those five.”
Cook is a native of Nibley and a graduate of the Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston, Texas. He is currently practicing with the law firm of Ericson and Shaw.
Knight said Cook has “much needed court experience,” and “a good understanding of law.”
Cook said he is happy to be chosen. He said that a judge is often the last person people see after their trial, and that he hopes he can help them understand why they received the punishment.
“As a judge, you’re a representative of the city,” he said. “People make mistakes. Hopefully you can correct that and send them on their way.” Cook said the main reason he applied for the position was so he can help people, and help them better understand the law.
Cook will receive the required training for the position May 7-11. His application must then be reviewed and certified by the state Administrative Office of the Courts on May 30. The current judge, Jack Stevens, will retire July 30.
“It does sound funny that we have Zook and Cook,” said Councilman Bryan Hansen.
