New student body president hopes to increase student involvement

With a narrow victory now behind him, newly elected study body present Trevor Olsen is turning his attention to the goals that were part of his campaign platform.

The senior in international business and finance at Utah State University received 50.44 percent of the vote in the general election that ended Thursday — 145 votes more than his competitor, Miles Brooks. The announcement was made Thursday night in the Taggart Student Center, where Olsen made a short speech about his goals for the upcoming year.

He said his biggest goal is to help students get more involved in campus life.

“While we have a lot of involvement at Utah State, I don’t think it’s what it could be,” Olsen said.

He also plans to connect students and alumni by creating a new website, which would be a way for students to get help on their resumes or receive job shadowing and networking opportunities.

“The plan is that the website will centralize involvement and research opportunities on campus,” he said.

In addition, he hopes to improve dining options on campus as well as make the administration more accessible and visible to students.

Olsen spent the past year as the administrative assistant to current Utah State University Student Association president Doug Fiefia.

Fiefia said he believes that experience will serve Olsen well.

“I think he’ll do a good job,” Fiefia said. “He knows the position very well and knows the time commitment.”

“Through the extra opportunities with alumni, administration and the website, I want students to see that these aren’t extra things they have to do, but these are new things that will benefit their career,” Olsen said.

Olsen and the other elected officials will be sworn into office on April 17.
