Newcomer Westover, 2 incumbents, have plans for Lewiston Council
November 30th, 2015 Posted in OpinionLEWISTON — Lewiston voters have elected one newcomer and returned two incumbents to the City Council. Top vote-getter Jonna Westover, the newcomer, and incumbents Stacey J. Prescott and Kim Bodily — who were separated by only one vote — will be sworn in for their four-year terms in January.
Newcomer Westover received the most votes in the six-candidate field with 212. Westover works part-time at Utah State University conducting antiviral research, and has lived in Lewiston for nine years. She has served on the Lewiston Library Board for six years and for two years was a chairperson for the Lewiston 4th of July Committee. This will be her first time on the City Council.
“I want to serve on the City Council because I believe that making a difference at the local level does matter in people’s lives,” Westover said. “I believe that with my skills, knowledge and experience I can contribute to the great work the Council does for our community.
“I will help Lewiston maintain a secure fiscal position, and continue building our safe and beautiful city, all while respecting the traditions of the community and honoring our neighborhoods’ values,” she said.
The second most votes went to incumbent Stacey J. Prescott with 174. Prescott is a retired Utah Highway Patrol trooper and has been a Lewiston resident for 18 years. This will be his second term.
“I hope to continue to support our great city by keeping the budget within the parameters of the existing funds, and continuing to maintain a balanced budget,” Prescott said. “Lewiston is a great place and, with your continued support, I hope to help meet the goals and desires for a future that will help protect our community, and continue to make Lewiston the place we foresee futuristically.”
Incumbent Kim Bodily also was reelected with 173 votes, one fewer than Prescott. Bodily has been a Lewiston resident his whole life and grew up on his family’s farm.
“I have a fairly good view of the concerns in the agricultural and residential areas, growth being number one in both,” Bodily said. “Keeping this balance is sometimes challenging yet rewarding when you see our town growing and yet still maintaining our farm community identity.”
Westover, Prescott and Bodily join Don Baldwin, Robert Martinez and Mayor Kelly Field on the Council.
