PARADISE — Preparing for his third harvest season, Paradise Valley Orchard owner Lorin Harrison says the orchard is ready to expand. In addition to producing apples, eggs and apple cider, this summer the U-pick orchard will begin producing vegetables.

Located south of Paradise, Utah, the orchard currently has nearly 250 apple trees that produce 20 different types of apples. After two years of working with the apple trees, Harrison said he is excited to start growing vegetables. Harrison believes selling vegetable will help ensure the orchard’s success.

“We would like the orchard to sustain itself,” Harrison said. “We’re at the mercy of Mother Nature and that’s why we want to expand.”

Harrison has worked with professors at Utah State University to improve production in environmentally friendly ways.

“We’re not certified organic nor do we plan to be,” Harrison said. “But we are as natural as we can possibly be.”

Produce from the orchard is sold only at the orchard’s store, located at 9971 S Highway 165. During the harvest season the store is open on weekends and by appointment during the week. The orchard uses a Facebook page to inform customers about changes in the store’s hours.

Paradise residents enjoy having the orchard near by. “It’s a fun experience to go out and pick your own apples,” said Callie Checketts, a Paradise native.

Harrison uses the orchard to encourage people to eat locally.

“We want people to get as much local food as they can,” Harrison said. “It’s neat to have kids see where their food comes from.”
