LOGAN—A Salt Lake City media relations executive came to Utah State this week to give public relations and marketing students tips on achieving career success.

“Have a racehorse mentality,” Tim Brown, a partner at Richter7, told about 35 students at a lunch meeting of the Public Relations Student Society of American (PRSSA). “Show up to work a little earlier and leave a little later; and at work, work.”

Among the attributes of a “fabulous pro,” Brown said—talent, originality, creative ideas, sound judgment, dependability, communication skills, a strong sense of responsibility and a sense of humor.

“The ‘like factor’ is also key,” Brown said. Co-workers enjoy being around people with a high “like factor,” he said, and don’t worry about little mistakes they make.

The Richter7 executive also shared attributes employers look for in a promising employee. He listed feistiness, a creative mind, good judgment, professional appearance and the ability to thrive in a fast-changing environment.

Richter7 was founded in 1971 and has been named Utah’s “Best of State” advertising agency for the past seven years. Richter7 specializes in advertising, design, interactive work and public relations for local, regional and national clients. Brown focuses on PR and getting clients exposure in the national media.

USU’s chapter is a member of the national PRSSA organization, made up of future media relations professionals. The student group connects its members to the professional PR world through a variety of real-world activities and projects, including inviting professionals to speak on campus.

The Utah State University PRSSA has been recognized at the national level and has twice won bids to host the Mountain West Regional PR Conference in Logan each spring.

USU PRSSA aims to create an interactive learning environment for students interested in public relations, marketing, networking with professionals, and gaining hands on experience before graduation.
